چکیده

We study various properties of closed relativistic strings. In particular, we characterize their closure under uniform convergence, extending a previous result by Y. Brenier on graph-like unbounded strings, and we discuss some related examples. Then we study the collapsing profile of convex planar strings which start with zero initial velocity, and we obtain a result analogous to the well-known theorem of Gage and Hamilton for the curvature flow of plane curves. We conclude the paper with the discussion of an example of weak Lipschitz evolution starting from the square in the plane. keywords: String-theory, minimal surfaces, Minkowski space, geometric evolutions.

The Dynamics of Knotted Strings Attached to D-Branes

We extend the general solution to the Cauchy problem for the relativistic closed string (Phys. Lett. B404 (1997) 57-65) to the case of open strings attached to Dp-branes, including the cases where the initial data has a knotlike topology. We use this extended solution to derive intrinsic dynamical properties of open and closed relativistic strings attached to Dp-branes. We also study the singul...

Lorentzian varifolds and applications to closed relativistic strings

We develop a suitable generalization of Almgren’s theory of varifolds in a lorentzian setting, focusing on area, first variation, rectifiability, compactness and closure issues. Motivated by the asymptotic behaviour of the scaled hyperbolic Ginzburg-Landau equations, and by the presence of singularities in lorentzian minimal surfaces, we introduce, within the varifold class, various notions of ...

P-CLOSURE IN PSEUDO BCI-ALGEBRAS

In this paper, for any non-empty subset C of a pseudo BCI-algebra X, the concept of p-closure of C, denoted by C(pc), is introduced and some related properties are investigated. Applying this concept, a characterization of the minimal elements of X is given. It is proved that C(pc) is the least closed pseudo BCI-ideal of X containing C and K(X) for any ideal C of X...

Open strings in relativistic ion traps

Electromagnetic plane waves provide examples of time-dependent open string backgrounds free of α ′ corrections. The solvable case of open strings in a quadrupolar wave front, analogous to pp-waves for closed strings, is discussed. In light-cone gauge, it leads to non-conformal boundary conditions similar to those induced by tachyon condensates. A maximum electric gradient is found, at which mac...

Generalizing Halfspaces Generalizing Halfspaces

Restricted-orientation convexity is the study of geometric objects whose intersection with lines from some fixed set is empty or connected. We have studied the properties of restricted-orientation convex sets and demonstrated that this notion is a generalization of standard convexity. We now describe a restricted-orientation generalization of halfspaces and explore properties of these generaliz...
